Things

I work in the Libraby, in the serial department, mostly opening mail, checking in and shelving periodicals. I learn things this way. In fact, now that Rory isn't here to watch the Daily Show, it's one of the only ways I learn things.

Like that Ray Charles died (Chicago defender). I did learn of Reagan's death from the TV, but only because it would have been physically impossible to have turned the TV on last week and not learned of Reagan's death.

I also know about the 14 year old boy who used the internet to arrange his own murder. (He was unsuccesful) (The Times of India, the Guardian)

And that the...editor?...of the Mirror was fired for printing fake Iraqi prison abuse pictures. (The Observer, the Spectator)

And that women in southeast asia (South Korea, I think) sometimes trade their own daughters for the daughters of another woman, and raises them as wives for her sons. The benefits of this scheme include not having to find wives and husbands for all her children, and that she can ensure the quality of her daughter-in-laws. (I forget what this was in)

And I know that the political party of one of the Ghandis won the recent Indian Election, but the Italian-born Sonia Ghandi declined the position of Prime Minister. (the Times of India, Outlook, India Today)

But I'm sure there are a lot of things that I don't learn this way, and I'm sure that at least a few of these things are of at least marginal importance.

Like I didn't know until 10 minutes ago that the olympic torch was coming through St. Louis tonight. Heck, I forgot that the Olympics where happening this summer.

Oh well. At least I know far, far more about Canadian politics than I ever dreamed of wanting to. (They have elections and everything! Liberals v. Conservatives. The Globe and Mail)
